In a hurry to make a bunch of half square triangles? Let me introduce you to my friend, 8-at-a-time HSTs.

That's right, one of my absolute favorite time-saving techniques is making Half Square Triangles (HSTs), 8-at-a-time and it's way easier than it sounds.

While this technique is a great time saver and is especially useful if you're making HSTs of all the same color, it may not be as useful as the more traditional 2-at-a-time method in certain instances.

Nonetheless it is a must-try technique if you haven't tried it yet.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Two squares of fabric the same size (see the below chart to make a specific size)

  • A marking pen or tool

  • Rotary blade

  • Ruler

Need to make a specific size of HST? This handy chart can help you decide how big you need to cut your two squares of fabric.

If you need to make a finished size square with a measurement of either a .25" or .75" , use the size of the squares the next step above that size. For example: if you need 2.75" finished HSTs, cut your two squares to 8.25", the same as the 3" finished HSTs.

LET'S GET STARTED:

Take your two squares of fabric and place them right sides together.

Next, mark two diagonal lines and two perpendicular lines through the center.

a white square of fabric with four lines drawn to make an "x" and a "+" crossing each other

Sew 1/4" away from each diagonal line on both sides (diagonal lines only).

a white square of fabric with red thread sewn 1/4 inch on either side of previously drawn lines to make an "X"

Cut on each of the drawn lines.

Open, press and trim your HSTs to your desired size.

And that's it! Now you have 8 HSTs ready to go.
